Citizenship & Residency

Argentina Citizenship by Investment

Argentina now offers citizenship for a qualifying contribution or government bond. No prior residency, no two-year wait, and your family comes with you. Applications are expected to open in the fourth quarter of 2026, and the first files through the door will be the ones already prepared.

A Passport Without the Two-Year Wait

On October 2, 2026, during Argentina Week in Paris, Economy Minister Luis Caputo announced South America's first Citizenship by Investment program. Until now, an Argentine passport meant two years of legal residency and an appointment with a federal judge. The new program skips the waiting room: international investors and their families can obtain Argentine citizenship, and one of the strongest passports in Latin America, without first living in the country.

BBI Argentina and our partner citizenship and residency firm are preparing client files now, so our clients are ready to file on day one.

Two Ways to Qualify

One route costs less. The other gives the money back, eventually. Which one suits you depends on what your capital would otherwise be doing for the next seven years.

Option 1: Treasury Contribution

A one-time, non-refundable contribution of USD $350,000 to Argentina's National Treasury. The most cost-effective route to citizenship, and the one most families are expected to choose.

  • Refundable: No
  • Term: One-time payment
  • True cost: USD $350,000
  • Family members: Added per person (see below)
  • Ideal for: Investors seeking the lowest total outlay

Option 2: Government Bond

A subscription of USD $800,000 to a government bond created specifically for the program. It has been reported as a 7-year, zero-interest bond, with the capital returned at maturity. Final terms have not yet been published.

  • Refundable: Capital returned at maturity (expected)
  • Term: Reported 7 years, zero interest
  • True cost: The return your capital would have earned elsewhere over the term
  • Family members: Not yet confirmed
  • Ideal for: Investors who prefer to keep their capital

Please note: real estate is not a qualifying investment under the announced program. A vineyard won't earn you a passport, but nothing stops you owning one while you apply. Investors who want a winery, a ranch or another productive asset in Argentina can pursue it alongside their CBI application, and BBI Argentina helps clients plan the two together.

Bringing Your Family

  • Spouse: additional USD $100,000
  • Children aged 18 to 25 (unmarried, with no children of their own): additional USD $100,000 each
  • Children under 18: additional USD $25,000 each

  • Each family member must prove the relationship and pass due diligence individually.
  • Argentina recognizes same-sex marriage, and spouses are included on the same terms.
  • Parents and grandparents are not included in the announced program and may need to apply separately.
  • Family contributions have been announced for the Treasury contribution route only.

Who Can Apply

  • Main applicants aged 18 or older
  • Applicants who can pass a full background and due diligence review
  • Applicants who can show the lawful source of their funds, transferred through the formal banking system
  • Applicants of good character and reputation
  • Applicants willing to make one visit to Argentina for biometrics, if required

Due Diligence

The government has confirmed that applications will be reviewed to OECD and FATF standards. APCI leads the review together with the State Intelligence Secretariat (SIDE), the Financial Information Unit (UIF), and the Ministries of Security and the Interior. In plain terms: they will look closely, and they will look everywhere.

  • Identity: verification of all applicants
  • Source of Funds: traceability and lawful origin of the investment
  • Financial Profile: assets, wealth and banking history
  • Jurisdictional Risk: countries of citizenship and residence
  • Background: criminal and reputational records
  • Immigration History: previous visas and residencies

Documents Typically Required

Personal Documents

  • Valid passport
  • Birth and marriage certificates (apostilled or legalized, and translated)
  • Criminal record checks from every country of residence

Financial Proof

  • Bank statements and transfer records
  • Tax returns and company records
  • Sale agreements, audited accounts, inheritance documents or investment statements, as applicable

All documents must be apostilled or legalized and translated into Spanish by a certified translator.

Step-by-Step Application Process

BBI Argentina and our partner citizenship and residency firm walk you through every stage. The firm prepares and files your application; BBI coordinates the plan and any investment you make in Argentina alongside it.

  1. Initial Consultation: your goals, your family and your eligibility.
  2. Eligibility & Due Diligence Review: your background and source of funds are reviewed, and any issues flagged early, while there is still time to solve them.
  3. File Preparation: documents gathered, apostilled, translated and organized, so your file is ready before applications open.
  4. Submission to APCI: your application is filed through the official channel as soon as it opens.
  5. Government Review: APCI coordinates the interagency checks and sends its recommendation to the DNM.
  6. Approval & Investment: once approved in principle, you make the contribution or subscribe to the bond.
  7. Visit & Passport: one visit to Argentina for biometrics and final formalities, followed by citizenship and passport issuance.

Estimated processing time: under four months from a complete application (a government target, not yet confirmed). The DNM must decide within 30 business days of receiving APCI's report.

Key Considerations

Several program details will only be confirmed when the implementing rules are published:

  • Bond Terms: term, interest, currency, and whether the bond can be sold or must be held
  • Family on the Bond Route: family contributions have been announced for the Treasury route only
  • Payment Timing & Refunds: whether funds are paid before or after approval, and the refund rules if an application is refused
  • Government Fees: application and due diligence fees
  • Authorized Agents: whether applications must be filed through licensed agents
  • Application Cap: a first wave of approximately 5,000 applications has been reported, but no published rule sets a cap
  • Productive Investment: whether investments in operating businesses can also qualify

What This Means for Investors

Neither court case involved a CBI applicant, and the rulings apply to those specific cases rather than nationwide. The government continues to treat the program as in force, and the Supreme Court is expected to have the final word. Citizenship that has been granted is an individual legal status; applications still in process depend on the program's legal framework. We monitor every development and will update this page as soon as the courts or Congress act.

Benefits of Argentine Citizenship

  • Global Mobility: visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to 160+ countries, including the Schengen Area, the United Kingdom and Japan
  • Mercosur Rights: the right to live and work in neighbouring Mercosur countries
  • Dual Citizenship: Argentina does not require you to give up your current nationality
  • No Residency Requirement: no minimum stay, beyond one expected visit for biometrics
  • G20 Nation: citizenship of one of Latin America's largest economies
  • Lifestyle: Buenos Aires, the vineyards of Mendoza, and the lakes and mountains of Patagonia

Tax Treatment Under Law 27.802

Under Law 27.802, CBI citizenship does not by itself make you an Argentine tax resident. CBI citizens living abroad are generally taxed only on Argentine-source income. Tax residency can still be triggered by obtaining permanent residency or by spending 12 months in Argentina, so a passport is not a tax plan. We recommend consulting an Argentine tax advisor before relocating.

Protect Your Investment

No application can be filed yet, and the government has not yet published an official account for contributions. Do not transfer any funds for the investment itself until the official rules, portal and payment accounts are published. All contributions will be paid only to an official Treasury account. If anyone asks you to wire money before then, you have your answer.

Why Prepare Now?

Due diligence takes time. Bank records have to be collected, company documents organized, and apostilled police certificates arrive on their own schedule, which is rarely yours. Clients with a complete file will be among the first to apply when the program opens.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Argentina CBI program open for applications?

Not yet. The program was announced on October 2, 2026, and applications are expected to open in the fourth quarter of 2026. The official rules, application portal and payment accounts have not yet been published.

How much does Argentina citizenship by investment cost?

USD $350,000 as a non-refundable Treasury contribution for a single applicant, or USD $800,000 in a government bond. A family of four with two children under 18 totals USD $500,000 on the contribution route. Government and due diligence fees have not yet been announced.

Is the bond investment returned?

The capital is expected to be returned at maturity. The bond has been reported as a 7-year, zero-interest bond, but final terms have not been published.

Which family members can be included?

Your spouse (USD $100,000), unmarried children aged 18 to 25 with no children of their own (USD $100,000 each) and children under 18 (USD $25,000 each). Parents and grandparents are not included.

Do I need to live in Argentina?

No. There is no residency requirement. One visit to Argentina is expected at the approval stage for biometrics.

Can I keep my current citizenship?

Yes. Argentina permits dual citizenship. Please confirm that your current country also allows it.

Will I become an Argentine tax resident?

Not automatically. Under Law 27.802, CBI citizenship alone does not create tax residency. Living in Argentina for 12 months or obtaining permanent residency can.

Is the program legally secure?

The program has been officially announced, but its founding decree is being challenged. Two appeals courts ruled against the decree in June 2026 in cases that did not involve CBI applicants, and the government has appealed to the Supreme Court. Repeal bills have been filed in Congress; none has passed.

Does buying property in Argentina qualify?

No. Real estate is not a qualifying investment under the announced program. You can purchase a vineyard or productive asset alongside your CBI application, but citizenship is based on the contribution or the bond.

How long does the process take?

The government target is under four months from a complete application. The DNM must decide within 30 business days of receiving APCI's recommendation.

Is there a limit on applications?

A first wave of approximately 5,000 applications has been reported, but no published rule confirms a cap.

Does BBI Argentina file my CBI application?

No. Our partner citizenship and residency firm prepares and files your application, while BBI Argentina coordinates the plan and structures any investment in Argentina you wish to make alongside it. BBI Argentina is not a law firm.
