Citizenship & Residency
Argentina Residency & Naturalization: Established Pathways
Residency today, Argentine citizenship in two years. While the new Citizenship by Investment program waits on its final rules, Argentina's established residency routes are open now. Hold legal residency for two years and you can apply for Argentine citizenship, with no investment required, no formal language test, and no need to give up the passport you already carry.

- No Investment Required: none of the residency routes below requires capital
- No Formal Language or Civics Test
- Dual Citizenship Permitted
- Decided by a Federal Judge: since the June 2026 court rulings, citizenship applications are once again decided by the federal courts

Key Considerations
- Digital Nomad Visa: a transitory permit with no DNI. Time on this visa does not count toward permanent residency or citizenship, so plan to convert to Rentista or another residency before the 180 days run out.
- Income Test: the Rentista and Pensionado threshold follows the Argentine minimum wage, which rises monthly. Figures are confirmed on the day your application is filed.
- Fees: peso amounts converted at the Banco Nación rate of ARS $1,570 per USD (November 4, 2026). Renewals cost the same as the first filing. Legal, apostille and translation fees are separate.
- Documents: all foreign documents must be apostilled or legalized and translated into Spanish by a certified translator.
Investor Residency & Productive Investment
None of the routes above requires an investment, but many of our clients come to Argentina for both a passport and an opportunity. An investment in a vineyard, winery, ranch, orchard or hospitality project with real operations can support residency in its own right. BBI Argentina sources and structures the investment, while our partner citizenship and residency firm manages the residency application. One plan, moving in step.
Tax Considerations
- Argentine tax residents pay tax on worldwide income and an annual tax on personal assets.
- Non-residents are taxed only on Argentine-source income.
- Tax residency is triggered by obtaining permanent residency or spending 12 months in Argentina.
- Plan ahead: the timing of your residency and citizenship applications makes a real difference to your tax position. We recommend consulting an Argentine tax advisor before relocating.
Step-by-Step Process
- Initial Consultation: your goals, income, family and timeline.
- Choose Your Pathway: the residency route that fits, and whether an investment belongs alongside it.
- Document Preparation: documents gathered, apostilled and translated into Spanish.
- Residency Application: filed with the National Directorate of Migration (DNM); your DNI and tax ID follow.
- Citizenship: after two years, apply to a federal judge for Argentine citizenship, with your tax position planned well in advance.
BBI Argentina is not a law firm and does not provide legal, tax or immigration advice. Residency and citizenship applications are prepared and filed by our partner citizenship and residency firm, in coordination with BBI Argentina's investment and structuring services.
